Arranged marriages—considered primitive by Western ideals—continue to be practiced in some Muslim communities. In such marriages, the family of the bride and the family of the groom determine that their children will marry irrespective of the wishes of the bride and groom. Sometimes this decision is made while the children are infants. This approach to marriage, however, is not required by Islamic law. More often it is a cultural feature that transcends Islam.

At the same time, and as stated above, Muslim families are often far more involved in the engagement process than are most families in Western societies. For Westerners enamored with stories of star-crossed soul mates marrying for love alone, the imposition of the families of the bride and groom in the process of engagement seems egregious. Yet, comparing the divorce rates between these different approaches to marriage may provide reason to curtail Western critique.
